Week 1: Friday, August 3, 2007: Las Vegas, Event Day at Boys and Girls Clubs

Today begins with a 5:30am wake-up. Ali and Kristian are out of the house by 6:30, and head to downtown Las Vegas at the Jackie Gaughan B&Gs Club on the UNLV campus, the other will be at the North Las Vegas B&Gs Club. Getting ready for the first of four presentations is a bit nerve-racking especially since this is the first Boys and Girls Club event we have done since our tour across Canada in 2005.

The kids are great, and most are really interested in expanding their comfort zone and finding their top passions. This is what makes it all worth while. We are thrilled to see these kids smiling, leaving the room, knowing that they are a clearer on their life's direction.

Throughout the day we give four presentations at 2 Boys and Girls Clubs. In total, over 300 kids attend. The presentation is an hour long, divided into two half-hour parts. The first half-hour is information developed by the Quantum Learning Network from their SuperCamp program. This is the part where we first try to create a feeling of safety so that the kids can step outside their comfort zone without too much fear from themselves or their peers.

The second part is The Passion Test, a highly effective method for becoming really clear on what you want to create in your life. This works tremendously well with kids because much of the time they don't know what to put their attention on. This provides an excellent opportunity to find out exactly what makes them happiest so that they can maintain greater attention.

We worked at a SuperCamp in Seattle throughout mid-July. Supercamp is a worldwide 10 day residential life-skills and academic summer camp. While working as team leaders, the lead facilitator, Aileen Socrates, coached us on our presentation. The impact that we have had on the kids would not be nearly as profound without her expert advice, guidance, and choreography of the presentation.

After a really long day, Ali and Kristian go out for dinner with Brandi and Jimmy. We have a lot of fun at a restaurant talking about the Quantum Learning Network and how amazing a program it is for teachers and kids, especially SuperCamp. Jimmy, an amazing BMW mechanic sits through our talking patiently.

We eventually head over to a bar called, "Tee Shots". This is a real Nevadan bar with big drinks. Our time with Brandi and Jimmy ends with a nice walk home including climbing over an 8 foot wall. When we arrive home, we all start playing with Brandi and Jimmy's two dogs, and the two dogs they are house-sitting. We soon realize the visiting English Bulldogs have fouled the carpet 4 times. Unfortunately, Jimmy uses up all the carpet stain remover because over the night, the dogs pull over a potted plant and soil their entire living room carpet.

After getting a call from Shah and Christy, Ali and Kristian head to the airport to have a warm reunion. The team finally reunites, and we enjoy Las Vegas by driving down the Strip. Quite late now, everyone goes straight to sleep when we get home.
