Week 2: Friday, August 10, 2007: From the Road, Gallup, NM to Durango, CO: 173 Miles

We wake up intending to get the first person on the road by 7am. Unfortunately, Shah who is scheduled first has developed a knee injury, so Kristian gets up to go, and finds that his tire is flat. He changes the tube while Ali gives Shah a chiropractic popliteal adjustment. The popliteus is a muscle behind the knee that is a cause of many athletic knee injuries.

Finally, the tube is replaced, and thanks to Christy the car is packed. Kristian sets out on the road while the rest of the gang head over to the local Walmart to pick up supplies. While on the road, Kristian gets another flat, repairs it, and 2 minutes later Casper (our 1990 Honda Civic Support vehicle) passes by. Kristian decides it is not his morning, so Ali takes over.

Ali motors along the Interstate like his performance yesterday before turning north up heading into the Navajo Nation. That's where he hits a slight headwind and powers through some of the hills before the long valley plains.

Kristian is next out on the road. Leaving from 30 miles north of the interstate, he is refreshed after a nap while Shah drove to this point. He begins cycling and feels the heat of this dessert. It is a wonder that a civilization of people have existed here for millennia.

Ali and Kristian trade off cycling a few times throughout the day. Kristian cycles through Farmington over to Aztec while Ali is still on the road. Eventually, Kristian reaches the Aztec ruins only to find they are closed for the day. So, he hits the road, wondering why Christy, Ali and Shah have not met up with him. After cycling over 60 miles, they finally catch up with him with an amazing burritto. Complications led to them waiting over an hour and a half to pick up all the burrittos.
