Week 4: Monday, August 20 – Idalia, CO to Norton, KS: 133 Miles

Today we have a late start. After yesterday’s longest cycling day of the tour, Resting in the morning is well deserved. Eventually at 11am, Ali sets out on the first leg which passes the Colorado-Kansas border. Before Kristian leaves to follow Ali, he has a $1.50 piece of coconut cream pie at the motel we were staying in Idalia. This is a pretty delicious pie for $1.50.

At the turnaround, Ali picks up a couple of sandwiches for himself and Kristian. When Ali is passing Kristian on the road, he tells him that there will be a great sandwich waiting for him, and these were good sandwiches.

Relaying back and forth on our bikes the whole day, Kristian and Ali finally roll into Norton, KS. Dr. Crow is waiting for them. Also, there’s a reporter for the Northwest Kansas Newspaper. We cycle through the town with the reporter taking pictures, and eventually head to Dr. Crow’s house. His house is right across the street from the County Courthouse, in downtown Norton. He is really hospitable to us. Finding us places to sleep, giving us clean towels and making us feel really comfortable. By the time we finish taking showers, most of the restaurants in the city are closing down. Dr. Crow takes us to Pizza Hut, where his son works and they stay open to serve us. Kristian and Ali order pizza and a pasta dish, filling up after another long day of cycling. Dr. Crow orders the chicken fingers.

We head home and watch a movie Dr. Crow recently rented, Dan Millman’s book turned to movie The Way of the Peaceful Warrior starring Nick Nolte. It is a really insightful movie talking about such things as walking in your truth and giving practical advice on how do this.

By 1:00am the movie is over, and it’s well past our bedtimes.
